Have a Voice: Participate in City Government
One way to make an impact in the community is to become active in attending official city meetings where future planning and other key decisions are made. I always encourage residents to attend these public meetings. Create a voice for yourself and other residents by addressing your needs as a community and learning more about issues facing your neighborhood.
There are a variety of city boards, commissions, and City Council meetings taking place each week. By visiting phoenix.gov, and clicking on “public meetings” you can get an updated list of all upcoming meetings open to the public.
The City Council Subcommittees include: Arts, Culture and Preservation; Downtown, Economy, Sports and International; Housing and Neighborhoods; Innovation, Parks and Recreation; Public Safety and Veterans Issues; Sustainability; and Transportation and Seniors. Most weeks we have meetings of the full City Council on Tuesdays at 2 p.m. and Wednesdays at 3 p.m. You can call my office to verify the schedule or visit the website previously mentioned.
Phoenix is divided into 15 urban villages each of which has a Village Planning Committee appointed by the City Council. The committees are designed to make recommendations for the citywide planning Commission and the City Council. The topics addressed at these meetings are: identifying areas or provisions of the General Plan text that need refinement and updating; defining in greater detail the intended future function, density and character of sub-areas of the Village; and commenting on proposals for new zoning or land use districts.
The urban villages in District 2 are North Gateway Village, Deer Valley Village, Desert View Village and Paradise Valley Village. To obtain a map and information on the five villages in my district, or if you are interested in becoming a member, visit phoenix.gov/planning and contact my office. For a full list of all District 2 meetings, visit phoenix.gov/district2. Click on “events” and then “district events.”
For those residents actively involved in serving their community, I would like to thank you for your time, support and dedication. It’s important to understand how your local government works and how you can make a difference where you live, work and play.
