2006 – Another Year of Progress for Northeast Phoenix

New years are seen as symbolic of new beginnings. This is a special New Year for me, as I look forward to an inauguration ceremony for myself and three of my City Council colleagues at10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 3, at the Orpheum Theatre, 203 W. Adams St. in downtown Phoenix.

And as we celebrate this New Year, we are looking forward to a promising future of working with the community to make northeast Phoenix an even better place to live, work and play.

We are lucky to live in a unique area, which blends desert beauty and open spaces with progressive, exciting developments that are setting national standards. My office will continue working to balance our developments in housing, retail and restaurants with the need to maintain the atmosphere that drew so many people here in the first place.

To meet these goals and many others, here are some of our plans for 2006:

  • •We hope to put in place stronger restrictions on developments within our scenic corridors. Phoenix has an unparalleled system of mountains and preserve land. The Sonoran Preserve is the newest addition and we will work to keep purchasing land to keep thousands of acres open and as pristine as possible.
  • are developing a citizen’s committee to look into maintaining washes in the area. This expands on $200,000 in funding we helped secure to clean washes. These steps restore the beauty of natural washes and help them do the important job of channeling water after storms.
  • 2 is excited to see the development of the Reach 11 Recreation Area Sports Complex at Cave Creek Road between Deer Valley and Pinnacle Peak roads. The groundbreaking was last summer and we are hoping to watch youth soccer there by the end of the year. Big thanks go out to the Arizona Sports and Tourism Authority for its recent $1.4 million grant to fund lighting for the 10 soccer fields. The developed and undeveloped parts of Reach 11 are absolute jewels, where children and families can participate in organized activities, horseback riding, and hiking and biking. The area is a great example of what makes our part of town special.
  • all of our development, we will work with city staff, businesses, chambers of commerce, the Greater Phoenix Economic Council and other groups to attract even more quality jobs to northeast Phoenix. Living and working in the same community, without a long drive, enhances lifestyles while helping the environment.
  • East Sonoran Parkway Alignment Committee of local residents will help plan the best route for a key, future transportation corridor.
  • North Tatum Fight Back will address speeding concerns on a busy stretch of Tatum Boulevard and we will also keep working with school districts to address community concerns about high school students parking in neighborhoods.

I am so excited to see so many District 2 residents at our community open houses and monthly Issues and Info breakfasts. I hope you can attend one in 2006 to let us know how you feel about the direction of our community. You can always contact my office about any issue impacting your family or neighborhood.

These ideas are not just New Year’s resolutions; they are our promises to help enhance our neighborhoods and our treasured quality of life.

From the whole District 2 office, we wish you a happy and healthy 2006.
