Voluntary Acquisition & Relocation Services (VARS)

As part of the Voluntary Acquisition and Relocation Services (VARS) Program’s memorandum of agreement with the Federal Aviation Administration and State Historic Preservation Office, VARS’ archaeological consultant (Desert Archaeology) will be compiling an archaeological report. It will encompass the neighborhoods located within the VARS Program area (7th Street to 44th Street, Washington to University). As part of this process, current and former VARS residents are being asked to submit suggestions for individuals to be considered to include as part of the report. Their outstanding contributions as builders of the community must be from more than 50 years ago. All suggestions will be taken into consideration for inclusion into the final report. The suggestion form must be submitted to Desert Archaeology by May 30, 2012.

Desert Archaeology will look to answer the following questions in the selection process of suggested individuals:

  • Can the person's accomplishments be verified, preferably through multiple sources of information?
  • Does the person's life story have strong human interest?
  • Does that life story shed light on VARS from an important historical perspective?

If you have questions about this process, please call the VARS’ CONNECT Line at 602-443-8065.

VARS is a voluntary “buy-out” program for eligible homeowners to sell their residences to the city of Phoenix and relocate to a comparable dwelling outside of the program area and outside other noise-impacted areas. An estimated 1,100 single-family detached dwellings are within the eligible service area (7th Street to the west; 44th Street to the east; Washington Street on the north; and University Drive on the south).
