  • Most of the collection is on view in “permanent” locations or in temporary exhibitions.

Q: How is art acquired?

  • Art collecting began in the early 1960s with purchases made as terminals were constructed.
  • Most art is still acquired with construction funds.
  • A 1986 Phoenix ordinance authorizes up to one percent of capital improvement projects (construction monies) to be spent on art commissions and purchases.
  • The commissioning/purchasing process is managed by the Phoenix Office of Arts and Culture in collaboration with Phoenix Airport Museum staff.

Q: Who chooses the exhibitions?

  • Phoenix Airport Museum staff collaborates with artists, collectors and museums to either bring in existing exhibitions or to create new ones.
  • Exhibitions may consist partly or solely of works from the Airport’s collection.
  • Exhibitions may include aviation history or natural history elements.

Q: How often do the exhibitions change?

In general, each exhibition is on view for six months.

Q: Do you have permanent exhibitions that don’t change?
