PHX Sky Train™ Facts

  • Stage one, between METRO light rail, East Economy parking and Terminal 4 opens 1st quarter of 2013 and will be 1.7 miles long
  • Stage two opens in 2020 and extends an additional 3.2 miles all the way to the Rental Car Center
  • It will take 5 minutes to travel between the 44th Street station and Terminal 4, arrive as frequently as every three minutes, depending on demand, and the round trip will take 12 minutes.
  • The trains will run continuously in both directions at a cruising speed of 35 mph and will operate 24/7
  • Each three-car train transports about 160 passengers and Stage one will use one-, two- and three-car trains
  • Stage one construction was paid entirely with Airport revenue and passenger fees (no local tax dollars used) and is employing nearly 6,000 people
  • As many as 5 million passengers will ride the train the first year
  • The train will be driverless and run on a center-rail guideway
  • The train will pass over an active taxiway as it travels to and from Terminal 4. The bridge over the taxiway will be high enough to allow a 747 to pass underneath
  • The taxiway bridge alone will take 3,000 cubic yards of concrete – the equivalent of 45,000 wheelbarrows
  • The columns supporting the guideway are as deep under the ground as they are tall

Bridge over Taxiway “R” is completed and taxiway re-opens October, 2010
Modifications begin inside Terminal 4 in preparation for train station November, 2010
Maintenance and Storage Facility is completed January, 2011
“Topping Off” of 44th Street & Washington Station structure May, 2011
1st train car arrives on-site August, 2011
Terminal 4 modifications are complete November, 2011
East Economy Lot Station is completed December, 2011
1st train car run on test track December, 2011
44th Street & Washington Station is completed March, 2012
Terminal 4 Station is completed March, 2012
Train car system testing begins September, 2012
PHX Sky Train operations begin 1st Quarter, 2013
