Promoting Literacy Is Just Plane Fun

What do planes and books have in common? Both can transport us to all kinds of interesting and exotic places. That’s why Amelia the Airplane, Sky Harbor’s mascot, was a natural choice to help promote literacy to youngsters at Silvestre S. Herrera Elementary School.

Kindergarten students and first graders were thrilled to see Amelia on May 14, as part of the school’s Literacy Week activities. During her visit, the Airport mascot talked about Sky Harbor, answered questions, then read the book “Big Little Elephant” to the youngsters.

Herrera is a K-8 elementary school located at 1350 S. 11th St., and is in the Sky Harbor Community Noise Reduction Program area.
