Sky Harbor Continually Striving for Safety
Keeping travelers safe is the top priority at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. The focus is not only on the runways, but for travelers coming and going on the roadways as well. Sky Harbor’s Operations Division diligently works to make sure that all commercial vehicles that pick up and drop off passengers at Phoenix Sky Harbor are inspected and that drivers of those vehicles receive background checks and comply with Airport safety rules and regulations. This includes taxis, limousines, off-site parking and hotel shuttles.
All ground transportation companies that pick up passengers at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport must be registered with the Ground Transportation Office. Each new driver is required to be finger-printed and undergo a security threat assessment. Individuals who authorize drivers for their companies to pick-up passengers must also go through this process.
Once companies and their drivers clear the background checks, each vehicle must complete a safety inspection. In addition, every quarter the Ground Transportation Office verifies that the vehicles are inspected, have valid registrations and up-to-date statements of insurance. Approximately 1,500 cars are inspected each quarter.
The safety procedures don’t stop with vehicle inspections. Every two years, drivers must renew their permits, show proof of a Department of Transportation physical as well as attend an accredited defensive driving school.
Phoenix Sky Harbor’s Landside Operations team is also active in making sure travelers receive safe rides from the Airport. The Landside team monitors the curbs so that only registered transportation companies pick up travelers. This team also handles the enforcement of violations.
“Whether traveling to Phoenix for the first time, or a frequent visitor, the traveling public expects the Airport will ensure they have safe and reliable ground transportation options,” said Deputy Aviation Director of Operations Chad Makovsky. “Our safety permitting, inspection, and enforcement program is second to none in ensuring customers receive the services they expect when traveling to our community.”
America’s Friendliest Airport® strives to provide the highest level of service to travelers, whether it’s inside of the terminals, out on the airfield or on the roadways. Customer service is second only to safety and security at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.
