Hidden Pockets:

The Shemer Art Center and Museum recently sponsored a three-week outreach project at Wesley Community Center in downtown Phoenix. Sherrie Zeitlin, a ceramics and fiber artist, and Catherine Hammond, a writer and painter, worked with Wesley children to create "Hidden Pockets," a public art weaving and poetry piece which now resides at the Wesley Community Center.

During the residency, Sherrie taught students how to weave on a large loom, and Catherine worked with students to create short poems about their lives and neighborhood. The resulting artwork was a compilation of recycled materials and poems woven together to create a very colorful and textured weaving. Through the weaving and writing process, the children were able to share memories of their neighborhood which will soon be relocated by the City of Phoenix and Sky Harbor Airport.

Our thanks go out to Betty Mathis and the children at the Wesley Community Center, Sherrie Zeitlin and Catherine Hammond, the Shemer Art Center and Museum Association Board of Directors, and the City of Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department.
