Changes to the 2008 Firefighter Recruit process
The City of Phoenix has made several notable changes to the Firefighter Recruit recruitment process. Please review the following list of changes and key requirements in order to prepare for the process:
- Hiring process change – All applicants who pass the written exam will be placed on the eligible-to-hire list. The City of Phoenix will not be conducting a CPAT. The Fire Department uses the eligible list to invite applicants for the oral board interview process. The City of Phoenix Fire Department conducts two rounds of oral interviews: a preliminary interview, and a final selection interview. If you pass the preliminary interview, you will be invited to continue on in the process and be scheduled for a final selection interview.
- Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) - Proof of successful completion of a Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) from a licensed agency (local community college, private testing agency, etc.) within 12 months is required at the scheduled date of your final selection interview.
To learn more about registering for a CPAT course or scheduling to take the CPAT test at one of Phoenix’s local community colleges, please visit the following websites:
- Emergency Medical Technician Certification (EMT) - Proof of Valid certification as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) with the state of Arizona or National Registry is required at the scheduled date of your final selection interview.
This course is offered at most local community colleges. To locate a class for EMT you can visit the Arizona Department of Health Services web site at: http://www.hs.state.az.us/bems/courses.htm
- Medical Examination - Candidates must complete and pass a medical examination. This examination includes a cardiovascular fitness component that must be passed with a Tier 2 grading or better. You can refer to the following website for information on the Tier 4 Program at: www.phoenixfirehealth.com. You can refer to the CPAT Candidate Preparation Guide for more information on cardiovascular fitness and conditioning. This document is available for download at www.joinpfd.com.
